Brexit - status of British citizens in Hungary from 2022

Registration certificates and permanent residence cards previously issued without an expiry date to individuals who are UK citizens will be valid until the post-Brexit transition period, but not later than 31 December 2021. However, for a limited term, it is possible to apply for a national permanent residence permit for the individuals concerned under a favorable procedure.

The Registration Certificates for EEA Nationals issued to UK citizens will expire on 31 December 2021 with regard to Brexit. However, the transitional rules of the Act on the Right of Entry and Residence of Persons with the Right of Free Movement and Residence make it possible for them to apply for a national permanent residence permit on a "preferential" basis.

The application can only be filed between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021. In all cases the competent authority makes decision on the application within 30 days. With consideration to the approaching final deadline for the filing of these applications, employers are advised to check with British (including either English or Northern-Irish) citizen employees that they have taken the necessary steps to ensure that their stay and employment in Hungary can continue smoothly.
